MA UD Urban Theory
The theory component of the MA Urban Design at UEL is ‘hands on‘ and it works in close collaboration with the design component. A lot of urban issues are difficult to explore purely on a visual basis. This has to do with the abstract level of scale and complexity. For example, we can do models of buildings and they will partly tell us spatial and social relationships. In urban design that is different. We can do models of a city, but it is not that easy to understand the underlying forces, that are shaping cities. Concerning issues like migration or globalization, physical models might tell us very little. We have to read, write and talk, to gain a more holistic understanding of urban issues.
Students attend weekly lectures on distinct urban topics, followed by seminars. The fields of studies range from urban history, theory, interpretation and practice to science. Invited guests from different backgrounds enrich the course with diverse talks. We explore complexities of cities through discussions, writings, readings, lectures, drawings, student presentations, movies and excursions.

Anurag Verma has presented a range of thinking concepts about perception and interpretation. He used these concepts to explore and illustrate India's urban and architectural history, from early Hindu and Mogul architecture to contemporary cities and buildings.

The students met the architect and urban designer Christopher Alexander. He is the author of the books A Pattern Language and The Nature of Order, to mention a few.
According to Christopher Alexaner, the making of architecture and cities should be about wholeness. This concept addresses both a process and an understanding of an embracing interrelatedness. As such, architects and designers should engage everybody involved in making architecture as part of that wholeness, enabling a deeper participatory process of design evolution. This can be achieved by using tools or frameworks that a designer may develop, allowing an open and more appropriate process to unfold.
"If you don't love your project, don't do it. It has to come... über das Herz (from your heart)."

Lecture by UEL Visiting Professor Rodrigo Pérez de Arce about concepts of time in architecture and urban design. Rodrigo Pérez de Arce showed a variety of different case studies from around the world. In addition, he discussed student work in the light of time, phasing and implementation... "to the point when the city takes care of itself"

Prof. Lidia Diappi
Lidia Diappi is Professor for Urban Planning and Politics at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy where she is conducting research into growth models of urban planning.Professor Diappi has been employed various comparative computational processes to investigate urban sprawl and economic dynamics, using neural networks and cellular automata.She has just published her latest book Evolving Cities: Geocomputation in Territorial Planning and will talk about the synthesis of urban dynamics, economics and computational codes.
Prof. Dr. Paul Langley
Dr. Paul Longley is Professor of Geographic Information Science in the Department of Geography at UCL and acts as Deputy Director of CASA.
He was previously Professor of Geography at the University of Bristol and has also worked in the universities of Cardiff, Reading and Karlsruhe. His research is focused around the principles and techniques of geographic information science (GISc), with research applications in geodemographics, public service provision and urban morphological analysis.He has authored, coauthored and edited many books such as Fractal Cities (with Michael Batty) Academic Press 1994.
Paul Coates
Since 1991 he has been running the MSc in Computing and Design at the University of East London. In 2001 he and two previous students set up CECA, the Centre for Evolutionary Computing in Architecture www.uel.ac.uk/ceca. As head of CECA, he has recently been involved in collaborative research projects with EU partners defining a virtual campus for design education. Currently CECA is collaborating with London Boroughs’ through UrbanBuzz www.urbanbuzz.org in developing generative models of urban structure for urban design.
Christian Derix
Head of Computational Design Research at AedasR&D and Joint Director of the Center for Evolutionary Computing in Architecture (CECA) at the UEL AVA, Derix will show some analytical and generative computational models for urban design.
Through a collaboration with Professor Diappi, Derix developed a cyclic feedback growth model of an urban scenario avoiding the dichotomy between street, block and super-structure.
Christoph Hadrys
Architectect and Urban Designer, teaching MA Urban Design (formerly known as MA Alternative Urbanisms) and Diploma Unit 2 at the School of Architecture and the Visual Arts at the University of East London, Hadrys will show how urban designers use urban codes in analogue applications. Case study is a competition entry for a scheme in Berlin-Buch (Planungsgemeinschaft Hadrys_Kyrein). It was awarded Schinkel Prize in Urban Design 2003.
